From humble beginnings, and through a series of name changes that led to a 1958 vote of the people and a 2-to-1 margin of victory for the advancement of Arizona State College to Arizona State University, ASU’s century-plus trajectory has led to its being recognized as the “most innovative” university in the country by U.S. News & World Report — three years in a row.
ASU is one of the largest public universities by enrollment in the U.S. As of fall 2018, the university had about 80,000 students attending classes across its metro campuses, including 66,000-plus undergraduates and more than 12,000 postgraduates. At the same time, ASU welcomed its largest-ever freshman class; the nearly 13,000 enrollments represented a 12 percent increase from fall 2017. More than 36,000 students are enrolled in ASU Online courses. Total enrollment at Arizona State surpassed 100,000 in 2018, reaching 103,530 for the fall 2018 semester.
